A water point is an important piece of infrastructure, but its presence alone does not describe the full service available to a community. Reporting needs to identify what users can reliably access.
A broader global goal
UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 addresses water availability, sustainable management and sanitation. Its targets and indicators are set out in the United Nations Goal 6 overview.
Separate installation from operation
Imagine a fictional village installing a new public tap. Completing the installation would not, by itself, establish water quality, maintenance arrangements or continuous availability. Those questions require their own evidence.
An informative account states which part of the service has improved and how it was assessed. A single construction milestone should not be used as proof that every water and sanitation need has been met.
