Magyar and Zelenskyy discuss closer ties at Brussels talks

Date:

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Brussels on 16 October 2026 to discuss bilateral cooperation, diplomacy and Ukraine’s path towards EU membership. Ukraine’s presidency said the leaders agreed to resume joint work at different levels and exchange visits, with dates to be arranged by their teams.

The Ukrainian account of the meeting says discussions also covered trade and agricultural products. Zelenskyy thanked Magyar for Hungary’s solidarity and for steps supporting the opening of two further negotiating clusters.

A new stage in the relationship

The meeting updates the picture described in AP’s June summit report, which examined Magyar’s arrival at the EU leaders’ table after Viktor Orbán’s election defeat. That report concerned the political transition; the October exchange provides a specific instance of the subsequent bilateral engagement.

Ukraine’s presidency says work is under way to open the remaining two negotiating clusters by year-end. This is an objective reported by one participant, not a guarantee that the necessary decisions will be completed on that timetable.

Negotiating progress is not membership

At the same summit, European Council President António Costa commended Ukraine’s reforms and referred to the opening of two more clusters during the week. That corroborates the broader negotiating context.

Opening a cluster begins work on a group of EU rules. It does not mean that those negotiations are closed or that accession has been approved.

The bilateral readout also stops short of announcing a new trade settlement or confirmed dates for reciprocal visits. Its concrete message is a commitment to renewed contact and joint work, with the implementation details left to the two governments’ teams.
