Food Security: Supply Is Only Part of the Picture

Date:

A market can display a wide range of food while some households still face difficulty obtaining enough suitable meals. Food security reporting needs to look beyond what is visible on the shelves.

A goal spanning several needs

UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 brings together hunger, food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture. The framework is described in the United Nations Goal 2 overview.

Ask who can obtain the food

In a fictional community, a store might receive regular deliveries while some residents face transport or affordability barriers. A delivery count would describe supply, but not establish that everyone can obtain nutritious food throughout the year.

Clear accounts identify the population, period and aspect being measured. Availability, access and nutrition are connected, but evidence about one should not be stretched to cover all three.
